The Department of Dermatology is part of the Medical Faculty at Mbarara University of Science & Technology. The Department is located at the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Administration block.
Basically dermatology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the skin, hair, nails, oral cavity and genitals. It also deals with cosmetic care and enhancement. Dermatology is literally the study of the skin and its appendages.
The Department is responsible for teaching clinical dermatology to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. There are currently seven postgraduate students. Over seventy undergraduate fourth year medical students take a rotation through the department every year. Nursing students too take a dermatology rotation every year.
Currently there is one Professor, one senior Lecturer and two assistant lecturers running the department. The department has a close collaboration with the department of dermatology in the University of Jena and works closely with the Senior Experts Services from Germany and Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) from USA to alleviate the need for lecturers.
