Institute Background

A good number of citizens in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) would like to take up different language studies for specific reasons. Ability to speak more than one international language is a vital requirement today as we all know. The urge to learn French mainly arises from proximity to French-speaking countries in the Great Lakes Region and the demand for it in order to work with tourist organizations, hotels and international organisations.  The desire to embark on learning Kiswahili arises from the need to enhance personal communicative ability so as to fit in the East African Community.  Similarly, the need for the Rwandan and Burundian students to learn English is being catalyzed by the proximity to, and their countries having joined, the English-speaking East African Community.

Kabale University comes as a saviour! The location of the university at the link to Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) provides a unique feature for business as well as cross-cultural dynamism. The Knowledge of these languages is and will always be important to this region.

The Institute of Languages of Kabale University is the only one of its kind in Uganda. It offers many courses in four languages namely: English, French, Kiswahili and Runyakitara (referring to the four languages spoken in western Uganda namely Rukiga, Runyankore, Rutoro, and Runyoro.

The Institute of Languages of Kabale University is prepared to offer these courses to all people who wish to learn any of the above languages individually at Certificate or Diploma levels, or a combination of any two languages like English and French, Kiswahili and French, Kiswahili and English, Runyakitara and English. It has highly trained manpower required to run the programmes.  Other services offered include translation of documents, like academic transcripts, passports, driving permits etc. and interpretation especially during conferences from any one language to another.

Many staff members and other students from within and outside the university have shown great interest to learn French, especially due to the fact that trends of globalization demand a working knowledge of two or more international languages. Applicants who join the university from Rwanda and the nearby countries have expressed the need to learn English, while the expatriates working with NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) and those living in Kabale have shown interest to learn Runyakitara. As already mentioned above, because of the East African union the knowledge of Kiswahili too has become very important.

The creation of the Institute of Languages was also to fulfill Kabale University mandate of instituting academic programmes that are relevant and meaningful to the communities within its catchment area.
