THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE – DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOTHERAPY

What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a medical profession that aims to alleviate pain and restore movement and function to as near normal as possible when someone is affected by injury, illness, disability or the process of ageing.
Having been in existence for over 50 years, Physiotherapy is an internationally recognised and fast growing profession. Training in Uganda started in 1971 and is overseen by the Allied Health Professions Council and the Uganda Association of Physiotherapy.

Who are physiotherapists?
Physiotherapists are people who are trained in physiotherapy. They are skilled professionals who work in a variety of both public and private settings such as hospital, clinics, sports clubs, industries and community settings. Physiotherapists are often referred to as ‘movement specialists’. They are trained to assess and treat a variety of conditions that affect the physical function of adults and children.

BSc Physiotherapy
The BSc Physiotherapy is a 4 year course aimed at producing competent skilled professionals to strengthen and develop physiotherapy within Uganda and beyond, guided by the best international practices.
Satisfactory completion of the course leads to the award of a “Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy” degree by Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

Teaching Physiotherapy

Multi-disciplinary Education
As a part of the larger medical faculty, students will learn alongside colleagues studying Medicine, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science and Pharmacy. In the early stages of the course the basic sciences will be learnt together. Later on there will be opportunities to share learning together within a community setting, to promote mutual understanding and team working skills.

Practical Training
As well as classroom based teaching, students will be taught practical assessment and treatment skills at the adjacent teaching hospital and in other hospitals and community settings around the country. This is to create graduates who are competent to work in a wide variety of settings.

Research Centred
This program will teach problem solving and research skills throughout the 4 years and all students will be required to carry out a research project within their final year.
