The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is one of the four Departments under MakSPH that was started after the Institute of Public Health was granted semi-autonomy within the Faculty of Medicine in 2001. The Department has 14 full time, 5 honorary and 5 Research Associate staff. The full-time staff comprises of 5 Associate Professors, 1 Senior Lecturer, 4 Lecturers, 1 Assistant lecturer, 1 academic programs manager, 1 assistant administrator and 1 Driver. The Department houses the following academic programs;

1.   Masters in Public Health – Distance Education Program

MPH-DE is a 3-year academic program designed for individuals who desire graduate public health training while they continue to work. It is modeled on the same objectives as the MPH – Full-Time program and covers the same academic content.

2.   Masters in Health Services Research

The Master of Health Services Research (MHSR) is a two-year multidisciplinary programme in the field of scientific investigation that studies how social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviour affect access to health care, the quality and cost of healthcare, and ultimately the health and well-being of the population. It aims at producing practically oriented graduates capable of providing leadership for improved planning and delivery of health services in the most effective and efficient manner.

3.   Masters in Health Informatics

Health informatics is a 2-year program, and a discipline at the intersection of information science, computer science, and healthcare. It deals with the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in health and biomedicine.

4.   Short course in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

This course is conducted in July and August of every year and is tailored to respond to the expressed needs of a researcher at and graduate students from various disciplines and levels. Skills acquired enhance participants’ productivity at their workplaces and improve quality of publications

In final approval processes is a curriculum for Master of Biostatistics, a 2-year graduate level program.

In addition to the academic programs, the department houses over 20 active projects and  2 research centres. These include PM2020, PMA2020 SCHISTO, SMART2D, Chlorhexidine-CISMAC study and NOURISH. PMA2020 is a project that uses innovative mobile technology to support low-cost, rapid-turnaround surveys to monitor key indicators for family planning. PMA2020/Schisto is a research module created specifically for Uganda, to develop the first nationally representative prevalence rate of Schistosomiasis. SMART2D is a randomised trial project aimed at evaluating the efficacy of various Type 2 Diabetes prevention and management strategies at facility and community level. NOURISH is a collaborative training and Nutrition intervention research project involving Trinity College Dublin, Makerere University, JCRC, IDI and Gulu University.   The research centres are Family health and research centre (FHRC) and Alcohol, Drugs, Addictions Research Centre (ADARC).
