About SLLC

SLLC is one of the five Schools and two Institutes that constitute the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) at Makerere University. Other Schools and Institutes are: School of Social Sciences (SSS); School of Psychology (SPY); School of Women and Gender Studies (SWGS); School of Liberal and Performing Arts (SLPA); Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) and the Confucius Institute (CI).

The School has five Departments and one Centre:

1. Department of Literature (DLIT)

The Department offers a wide range of courses in all fields of literature including Ugandan, East African, African, European, American and Caribbean literatures as well as Creative Writing and Film Studies. Website: http://llc.mak.ac.ug/departments/literature

2. Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC)

The Department offers a 4-year degree in Journalism and Communication covering broad areas: Print (newspapers and magazines); Broadcasting (Radio and Television); Public Relations; Online Journalism; and Development Communication. Students choose from two tracks for their specialisation: Journalism (print and broadcast) or Communication (Public Relations and Development Communication), with cross-cutting multi-media course units. 3. Department of European and Oriental Languages (DEOL)

The Department offers courses in a wide range of genres in a variety of subject areas: French, German, Chinese, Spanish and Arabic. Students offering degrees in Arts, Social Sciences and Education are welcome to specialize in any of these subjects. These are official languages of the United Nations and the African Union and are critical for multilingual and international career opportunities in this era of globalization. 4. Department of African Languages (DEAL)

The Department offers a variety of courses for students who would like to specialize in Ugandan and East African languages such as Kiswahili (the official language of the East African Community), Luganda, Runyakitara (Runyankore-Rukiga and Runyoro-Rutooro), and Lwo. 5. Department of Linguistics, English Language Studies and Communication Skills (DLEC)

The Department offers many courses in three subject areas: Linguistics, English Language Studies and Communication Skills. 6. Centre for Languages and Communication Services (CLCS)

The Centre offers courses in both foreign and Ugandan languages to local and foreign individuals at different language proficiency levels under the LANSKIL Programme. Learners can also offer language and communication skills courses for specific purposes which are tailored to their needs. Under the TRANSKIL Programme, the Centre also offers translation and interpretation services in various national, regional and international languages. 7. Confucius Institute (CI)

The School is also closely linked to the Confucius Institute which offers courses in Chinese at all levels (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced) to university students and the general public. It also offers specialized courses in Chinese for special purposes for those in business and the private sector. Taking courses at the Institute will open doors to a new world of opportunities for you if you are interested in working for Chinese companies, doing further studies in China, or doing business in China and Asia at large.
