Uganda Salvation Army – The Salvation Army International:
The Salvation Army commenced operations in Uganda in 1931 when Captain and Mrs Edward Osborne unfurled the flag in Mbale, as part of the East Africa Territory. Uganda became a separate command on 1 November 2005 and elevated to territory status on 1 March 2011.
In 2017, Territorial Commander Commissioner Vinece Chigariro led a team of officers and cadets to the border of South Sudan for three days of evangelism. The outposts at Adjuman and Ishongororo were upgraded to corps status, two new halls were dedicated to God and 58 senior soldiers and 14 junior soldiers were enrolled.
Both active and retired officers assembled for the four-day territorial officers’ councils, which provided inspiration, motivation and help in spiritual development.
Commissioner William Cochrane (Territorial Commander, Norway, Iceland and the Faeores Territory) was the guest speaker during Easter and through his ministry touched many souls. The support of the USA Southern Territory resulted in the provision of offices for DHQ, dining facilities for training college and staff quarters.
Numerous landslides on the slopes of Mount Elgon caused one fatality, displaced 4,159 people and some corps were affected. Salvationists supported victims with counselling and temporary shelters. An emergency team from IHQ, in collaboration with the territory, responded to the needs of the refugees in South Sudan by providing pit latrines. The territory continues to support refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo as well as South Sudan where people are in great need.
