The Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) established in 1997, under the Faculty of Science and shifted later to the Faculty of Development Studies as a department of Computer Science. In 2006, the department was elevated to the Institute of Computer Science. In 2016, the Institute was further transformed to the Faculty of Computing and Informatics which currently offers a dimension of programmes including – Bachelor of Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, short courses and postgraduate courses – MSc Information Systems, Health Informatics. Aligning strategically with the university mission as a center of excellence in teaching, research and community outreach, FCIS has fully established herself as a center of multidisciplinary research through diverse research areas in which all its staff are currently part of.
While trying to meet the increasing demand of ICT in the country, the Faculty of Computing and Informatics established the above programmes. This has brought to realization, an estimate of 3000 employees and entrepreneurs of most renowned firms in Africa, Europe and in the United States of America, a greater impact to the world. An evaluation of the quality of our graduates showed a high percentage of the graduates employable. This is because of the periodical curricular evaluations that are run every five years of their implementation. The intention of the evaluation is to accommodate an ever changing industry ICT and market demands through training and research.
Hoping to achieve these demands, the Faculty of Computing and Information Science completed its 4th Bachelor of Computer Science, 1st Bachelor of Information Technology, and 1st Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering curricula review in 2014 currently in its third year. With the implementation of these programmes, FCIS would wish to position herself as a center of multi-disciplinary training and research aiming at not only knowledge creation through research but also transforming new knowledge into practical solutions that solve community problems. Namely; ICT for Development (Health Informatics), Distributed Systems, and Computer Security. The curriculum designed and organized in various research and knowledge areas is enriching to the various industries including – health, business, management, energy, environment and etc. Furthermore, the importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in driving business & innovation in various sectors of production within the Ugandan economy cannot be understated. ICTs are applied in almost every discipline or sector from communications, health, governance, social media to transport and manufacturing. There is therefore need for highly qualified and competent human resource within the ICT sector. Since computing is a fundamental discipline under Information and communication technologies, it is important for Uganda to build human capacity in this discipline and its subareas. Having realized the need for capacity in Computer Science, the Faculty at MUST has reviewed its Computer Science curriculum so as to keep pace with the latest developments within a variety of computer Science fields while at the same time responding to the needs of the diverse industry.
