History and Mission
Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is a leading public health institution in Uganda and within the East and Central Africa region. Founded in 1954 as a Department of Preventive Medicine, under the Faculty of Medicine, it became an Institute of Public Health in 1974 and was upgraded to the School of Public Health in 2007. MakSPH is one of the four Schools under Makerere University’s College of Health Sciences. The school has four departments including;
- a) Health Policy, Planning and Management
- b) Epidemiology and Biostatistics
- c) Disease Control and Environmental Health
- d) Community Health and Behavioural Sciences

To promote the attainment of better health for the people of Uganda and beyond through Public Health Training, Research and Community service, with the guiding principles of Quality, Relevance, Responsiveness, Equity and Social Justice.
Core functions
We are inspired by our three core responsibilities of training in public health, conducting research and service delivery
Teaching
Our approach to teaching is hands-on to ensure acquisition of competencies that are relevant to the market and to deliver services to the communities. We are currently running the following programmes, with over 800 students in total:

- Master of Public Health (Distance)
- Masters in Health Services Research (HSR)
- Masters in Health Nutrition
- Masters in Disaster Management
- Master of Health Informatics
- MPH (Monitoring and Evaluation)
- Bachelor of Environmental Health Science
- Certificate in Health Services Management
Our students come from Uganda and other countries within the Eastern, Central and Western African regions.
Research
Our research projects have grown from 40 just under a decade ago to 114 as at the end of the 2016/2017 academic year. Through this work, we have created a vibrant innovation environment developing solutions that have benefitted hundreds of communities over the years, contributed to the development and enactment of several public health legislation and regulations in Uganda and beyond, built a large network of universities in Africa working on several research and development projects. From our work, we contribute to knowledge generation through over 100 publications, annually.
Service delivery
From participating in disease outbreak investigations and disaster management to implementation research in health facilities and communities across Uganda and Africa, our contribution to society is invaluable.
In addition to our primary mandate of capacity building and research in Public Health, we collaborate and or consult with the Ugandan Ministry of Health (MoH) and with district, municipal and city local governments, international agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in supporting the planning, implementation and evaluation of health programmes.
Over the years, our activities have focussed on education and research in health planning and management, health systems, policy analysis in health, nutrition and population, epidemiology and control of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria, reproductive health, child health, emerging diseases, public health in complex emergencies and environmental health concerns.
