The Institute of Open Distance and eLearning is a non-teaching academic unit, having Open Distance and eLearning academic staff, just like the University Library

Vision

The Institute subscribes to the Vision of Makerere University which is: To be the leading institution for academic excellence and innovations in Africa

Mandate

To provide ODeL and eLearning oversight and backstopping functions in the entire university. As an Institute, we play a day to day role to ensure that new programmes are enrolled onto the distance/online learning programmes and contact programes are increasingly adopting teaching with ICTs

The Institute is mandated to;

Initiate Continous staff training for effective delivery and management of Open Distance and eLearning Programmes in all academic units in the University.
Run training and development programmes and courses intended to build pedagogical capacity in the decipline of Open Distance and eLearning across the University
Develop Open Distance and eLearning pedagogy and andragogy programmes
Carry out continuous capacity building for ODeL managers, administrators, practitioners, tutors and study material developers
Provide oversight to academic units while developing/reviewing proposals and curricula for programmes to be offered through ODeL
Undertake research and publication in ODeL
Initiate innovations in ODeL programme delivery across the university
Provide oversight in the development and production of technology mediated study materials for ODeL Programmes
Acredit Technology mediated study materials before use in ODeL-delivered programmes and before approval of any new ODeL-delivered programmes
Market Makerere University ODeL expertise to various stakeholders
