HISTORY

Since 1969, the Department of Social Work and Social Administration (DSWSA) of Makerere University continues to be the leading institution for training social workers in Uganda and East Africa.

Our program is distinguished for its multidisciplinary approach that integrates not only teaching and research, but also influencing policy and practice. The Department boasts of a large number of staff with diverse professional experience and who are actively involved in teaching, research and development practice at local and international levels.

Further more, we are involved in development work. Our partners include other Universities, Government Ministries, United Nations Agencies and local and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Our partnerships cut across various fields such as livelihoods for vulnerable groups, child wellbeing and protection, youth, women and internally displaced persons welfare; HIV&AIDS, behavioural health (including sexual and reproductive Health); rights, peace and governance and social services delivery.

We are proud of our contribution to shaping social development at local and international level. Our alumnae are leaders in professional fields of practice and management.
