Background and Mission
The Department of Adult and Community Education (DACE) is one of the two deparments of the School of Distance and Lifelong Learning.  

DACE mainly conducts professional training in adult and community education. The professional training was started during the eighties through short courses followed by two-year Diploma in Adult and Community Education, which was replaced in 199 by the three year programme for the Bachelor of adult and Community Education (BACE).

To date, another post graduate programme, Master in Adult and Community Education was launched and it’s currently running. Other programmes which are developed and yet to start include

  1. Postgraduate Diploma in Adult and Community Education.
  2. Postgraduate Diploma In Monitoring And Evaluation
  3. Bachelor of Labour Education (BLE)

  • Management of Community Programmes

Distinctive Competence of DACE
DACE is a centre of excellence in the development and application of professional approaches to adult and community education: a leader in training adult educators and community development workers. It has not only fulfilled this role within the University but has also provided distinguished technical support to government and non-government agencies in functional adult literacy programmes for youth and adults through needs assessment, curriculum and materials development, and programme evaluation. It has provided similar services in the field of non-formal environmental education and community training, in workers’ education and in development communication.

Study Programmes

Body:

The department offers two programmes in the field of Adult and Community Education that is, BACE (Bachelor of Adult and Community Education) and MACE (Masters in Adult and Community Education).

Bachelor of Adult and Community Education (BACE)

Main Objective
To create a cadre of well trained decision-makers, designers and implementers of programmes in Adult and Community Education.  The programme is designed to equip students with sound knowledge, skills and attitudes in adult education, community development and contemporary socio-economic issues related to the development process. The graduates of this programme are expected to work in a multitude of adult and community education situations and environments in order to facilitate a quick process of community development and social transformation.

Master of Adult and Community Education (MACE)

Introduction
The Department of Adult and Community Education has had the particular mandate of developing professional adult education in the University and the country at large and has, in the pursuit of this goal, taken deliberate efforts to consolidate the position of the School of Distance and Lifelong Learning as a major academic unit in the University. In 1997, the Department launched the Bachelor of Adult and Community Education (BACE). The main goal of BACE is to create a cadre of well-trained decision-makers, designers and implementers of programmes in Adult and Community Education.  The programme is designed to equip its participants with sound knowledge, skills and attitudes in adult education, community development and contemporary socio-economic issues related to the development process. During the first five years, over 500 students had registered for the BACE programme and 270 of them had graduated, 46% female and 54% male
