COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES (CHSS)

Introduction

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences – CHSS, is an academic home of exceptional programmes, which prepare students for distinguished careers in the Humanities and Social Sciences. It provides students with an outstanding education that values the critical thinking and creativity necessary to adapt to changing social, economic, and technological conditions.

Students in CHSS acquire a broad understanding of human culture and society as they prepare for life and a career characterized by creativity, community engagement, and personal fulfilment. They work with outstanding lecturers who are also engaged in research and scholarship in their fields. The faculty also mentors’ students to present their research at scholarly conferences.

Academic programmes in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences also offer students a range of unique opportunities beyond the classroom, which will enhance their learning experience. These include faculty-student collaborative research, internships, service-learning, and many more possibilities.

Students graduating with degrees in the Humanities and Social Sciences go on to careers in a wide range of fields, including Public Relations, Counseling, Advertising, International Relations, Publishing, Radio and Television, Human Relations, Professional Writing, Graphic Arts, Law Enforcement, Public Policy, and many others.

Mission

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is dedicated to cultivating a teaching and research environment which reflects the highest standards of our disciplines, and to provide the insights, creativity, and enrichment of the humanities and the social sciences within the land-grant mission of Kampala International University.

Vision

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences embraces the teaching, research, creative activities and service objectives of KIU’s land grant mission, and the needs of a diverse constituency.

The College is committed to:

  • Providing its students, the highest quality of preparation in an atmosphere that promotes intellectual vigour, critical inquiry, citizenship, and creative decision-making requisite for personal growth and professional success;
  • Encouraging in its faculty exemplary scholarship of teaching, research, and service, leading to significant publications and performances;
  • In its vision to realize human potential and achievements, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is guided by the qualities of creativity, ethical integrity, and mutual respect.
  • Seeking excellence in research, innovation in teaching, and creativity in all academic fields in the College.
  • Instilling in our students the importance of responsible and sensitive global citizenship, through cultural self-reflection, ethical reasoning and historical understanding.

Objective

In addition to providing the preparation needed to earn a livelihood in our highly competitive society, the aim of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences also concern development of the inner resources of students so they may realize fully their own value and dignity as individuals.

This development of the student includes acquiring accurate knowledge in several areas to facilitate full mental growth and to prevent distorted judgments, developing ability to think and express ideas clearly regarding this knowledge, understanding one’s internal world as well as knowing and respecting the external one, providing opportunities for developing talent, and acquiring and perfecting skills.

The diversity of courses offered within the college permits students to explore various fields to aid them in career decisions.

Status Of The School

The College has courses and programmes accredited by the National Council for Higher Education – NCHE. It also has various departments that handle specific fields of specialization.

The college has 4 departments, which include:

  • Department of Journalism and Media Studies
  • Department of Political and Administrative Studies
  • Department of Applied Psychology
  • Department of Development, Peace and Conflict Studies.

Research Agenda Of The College

Researches that broaden the relevance of the Humanities and Social Sciences in contemporary life will be encouraged by the College. As a promoter of informed debate on matters of public importance, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will host public seminars, symposia and conferences. The College would bring academics, community leaders, students and public officials into dialogue around problems of local, national and international importance. The objective will be to build civic engagement and intellectual community.

The College would serve as an umbrella for a communal space where faculty and students could conduct conversations and research around designated themes. This will be done by promoting a trans-disciplinary conversation among historians, philosophers, and scholars of political science, literature, economics, religion, music, languages, cultural studies, art and all the media that contribute to the cultural universe we inhabit—not just within the University, but beyond the academic pale.
