Introduction
The College of Economics and Management (CEM) came into existence in March 2012 following KIU’s Senate resolution to create Colleges and Schools as a mechanism of creating an efficient and effective model which would structurally, administratively and pedagogically enhance management of KIU. Such an arrangement was conceived as a way of enhancing both students and staff through decentralized efficient service delivery and decision making.

Status of the College
College of Economics and Management consists of two schools (i.e. School of Business and Management and School of Economics). The College manages five departments approved by the Senate of KIU and these are Department of Economics and Statistics, Department of Finance and Accounting, Department of Human Resource and Supplies Management, Department of Leisure and Hospitality Management and the Department of Business Management.
College Management Structure
The College is headed by a Principal and assisted by a Deputy Principal. The five departments are headed by Heads of Department (HoDs) being assisted by two coordinators; the Teaching and Learning Coordinator (TLC) and the Department Examinations Coordinator (DEC).
Department of Economics and Applied Statistics
The Department houses the following programmes:

Department of Human Resource and Supplies Management

Department of Leisure and Hospitality
The Department houses the following programmes:
- Masters of Business Administration (Tourism)
- Bachelor of Tourism and Hotel Management.
- Diploma in Tourism and Hotel Management.
- Diploma in Secretarial Studies.
- National certificate in Secretarial and Office Management.
Practical Training
The Colleges houses programmes like; Tourism and Hotel Management, Business Administration (Accounting option) as well as Secretarial Studies and Office Management, which require Hands-on exposure.
Tourism students get the practical skills in the different components of the tourism industry like tour guiding skills, tour operations management skills acquired through a practicum in different tourist sites in the country and by engaging them with the different tour and travel companies
The students offering Secretarial Studies get hands-on experience in the production of different documents required in today’s office. They also get exposed to different machinery used in offices.
By making Entrepreneurship a compulsory course in the College having different modules embedded in it, all our students in the College through real-life projects acquire practical entrepreneurial skills. Such skills help them to come up with businesses in their fields of study like; opening up restaurants and bars, hotels and guest houses, baking and pastry, tour and travel companies, secretarial bureaus and events management businesses.
Achievements
The College signed a memorandum and understanding with Start hub Africa and Wadhwani Foundation all aimed at driving large-scale job creation through entrepreneurship, innovation and skills development. By so doing, students are being provided through a series of training with the 21st Century employability skills which drive family-supporting wages.
