The strategic location of Kabale University in South-western Uganda close to the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a major tourist destination area, justified setting up a Tourism Department at the University.
The Tourism Department was started in 2003 with two pioneer students who registered for a three-year Bachelor’s degree programme in Tourism Management. In 2008, a two-year Diploma in Tourism and Hotel Management (DTHM) was introduced. Later, the programme was reviewed and restructured into two diploma programmes indicated in the table below.
PROGRAMMES ON OFFER
|BACHELOR OF TOURISMMANAGEMENT
|DIPLOMA IN TOURISM
|DIPLOMA IN HOTEL MANAGEMENT
The Department has three full-time and two part-time lecturers. In addition to teaching and research, the lecturers provide general guidance to their students.
As tourism grows in Uganda, and in the region in general, there is great need to train competent specialized human resource, not only for Uganda but also for the whole East African region. There is, indeed, growing demand for specialized professional education as demonstrated by the enrollment of both national and international students at the University. The international students come mainly from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Southern Sudan. The University, therefore, not only trains for Uganda but also contributes professional human resource to the regional job market.
