Kabale University School of Medicine – Read the list of courses offered in the School of Medicine:

KABSOM currently offers training in three study clusters as follows:

  • Post Graduate level: master of public health (MPH), master of medicine (MMed) in Obstetrics & Gynecology and in Pediatrics and Child Health)
  • Undergraduate level: Three programs are offered namely, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB), Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS) and Bachelor of Environmental Health Science (BEHS)
  • Diploma Level: Diploma in Anesthesia and diploma in Health Services management.

NB: MMed programs in general surgery and in Internal medicine will start in the next (2018/2019) academic year.

The school of medicine now has a total of 253 students and 39 full time academic staff. All undergraduate and diploma programs are accredited by the NCHE, while the postgraduate courses are being readied for accreditation.

There are five academic departments, more will be added in tandem with the increasing number of taught programs and students:

Infrastructure :
Classroom space: shared lecture rooms and biomedical laboratories are located at Kikungiri main campus. Training in clinical disciplines are held at Kabale regional referral hospital, a 300 hundred bed capacity hospital and also at district general hospitals in the Kabale region.

Library: medical books and reference material are accessed at the main campus, a smaller collection together with Internet access for e-books has been established at the teaching hospital.

Anatomy laboratory: located at the Kikungiri main campus, it’s fully functional and students are able to practice dissection on human cadavers. Technical staff are also in process of mounting skeletons from bones that have been locally prepared.

Nursing skills Laboratory: This is fully functional and located at the main campus. Besides these students have been able to have other skills training in Kabale hospital, Mbarara referral hospital and from the Kabale institute of Health Sciences.

Staff offices: Both academic and administrative staff have shared offices located in the KABSOM building at the teaching hospital.

KABSOM GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE:
We are positioned in the University as a faculty with core business of teaching, learning, and research and community service. The faculty is headed by a Dean, who reports directly to the DVC (Academic affairs) and working together with the department heads and other staff.
Current Dean is Dr Sam Tumwesigire, MBChB, MMed, who is Senior Lecturer in Pediatrics at KABSOM and Senior Consultant Pediatrician, Kabale regional Hospital.

To excel through practical skills training in health care, research and community service. We operate in an environment of well-motivated staff, good infrastructure, Conducive policies and good governance.
