The Department of Animal Production and Range Management (DAPRM) provides training, conducts research, carries out outreach and provides consultancy services related to Animal Production and Rangeland Resources. In its core functions, the department focuses on efficient and sustainable animal production under various production systems and environmental conditions. The DAPRM derives its strength from the endowment of academic staff with expertise in the thematic areas that define mandates of the department. The thematic areas are Animal nutrition, Feeds and Feeding; Animal Improvement; Animal Health; Poultry Production; Ecology, Pastures and Rangelands; Dairy Production; Beef Production; Farming; Pig Production; Micro-livestock Production (Fish, Rabbits and Apiculture). Plans are underway to develop a special programme on pastoralism as a system that has been scarcely discerned.
The undergraduate courses in DAPRM are designed to include the basic principles in animal science, applied and practical aspects required to produce graduates with entrepreneurial capacity to run animal-related agribusinesses. In addition, the department runs a unique MSc. Programme in Animal Production and Marketing as well as offering tutelage in the PhD Programme in Agricultural and Applied BioSciences.
