AKU is the first University to offer a specialty Higher Diploma in Oncology Nursing in the region. This 18–month “work-study” programme, fully approved by the Nursing Council of Kenya, will help you earn your diploma while working. Classes and clinical experiences will be scheduled for two days per week so that students can continue working while taking classes. The programme will be offered at the Nairobi Campus of Aga Khan University and is open to any nurse who meets the minimum requirements.
Nurses enrolled in the programme must be able to travel to the Nairobi campus for two days per week to attend classes and clinical placements.
The opportunities the graduates will get include working as general nurses in a general ward or as specialist nurses in an oncology ward, outpatient oncology clinic, chemotherapy suite, radiotherapy unit, paediatric ward and palliative care unit.

Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following minimum university entrance requirements:
Must have form four (IV) level of education with a minimum aggregate score of C (Plain) in KCSE; Division two (II) in KCE/EACE.
A minimum C (Plain) grade in English and Biology/Biological Science.
At least two years continuous experience in a clinical care setting as a Registered Nurse, preferably in an oncology or medical-surgical setting.
A current registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya and a valid practicing license.
Students meeting the minimum requirements will be invited to write an English competency test and pass a basic nursing exam along with screening interview.

3 Certified copy of Enrolled Nursing transcript
Letter of release/recommendation from current employer
Two passport-sized photographs
Curriculum
The programme is based on the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology standards and competencies for the specialist oncology nurse and is adapted to the Kenyan context. The programme has 16 modules which will cover cancer screening and diagnosis, different cancers and their treatment, management of treatment related to side effects, paediatric cancers, palliative cancer and rehabilitation.
Key Admission Dates
The programme is offered over 18 months. Each academic year begins on the first week of August.
