The National Teachers College NTC Muni

A centre of excellence in professional teacher training for national, regional and international development Teachers’ College, Muni is one of the secondary school teacher training colleges in Uganda.

It offers courses leading to the Award of Diplomas in Education of Kyambogo University. It is fully funded by the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Education and Sports. NTC Muni is situated in Muni Village, Nyio Parish, Oluko Sub-county, Ayivu County in Arua District in West Nile Sub region. It is situated about 6.4Kms south of Arua Town along Arua-Packwach highway (see map on the right). The College started with physical area of 290.81 acres of land.

Infrastructure

Recently, 130.77 acres of the land was allocated to Muni University leaving the NTC with 160.04 acres. The College was founded as Arua Primary Teachers’ College as one of five (5) giant Primary Teacher Colleges in the Country (Kabale, Kaliro, Mubende, Muni, and Unyama), in the early 1970s with assistance from United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The construction of the College was interrupted by the Liberation War and civil strife between 1979 and 1985, leaving most of the structures incomplete.

History of National Teachers College NTC Muni

In 1981, the Primary Teachers College opened in the uncompleted buildings. In 1985, National Teachers College Muni, took over the Primary Teachers College and moved to Mvara. It was later turned into a Core Primary Teachers’ College. Its first admission was 22 students and a staff of five lecturers.

However, between 1985 and 1992, with assistance from development partners (UNHCR), National Teachers’ College Muni developed infrastructure and was able to increase enrolment to over 800 students for both DES and DEP programmes. Between 1993 and 2005, enrolment increased to over 1000 students after the college got support from EDF to rehabilitate buildings and put up laboratories. Teaching staff increased to thirty (30). The numbers of both students and lecturers have been steadily increasing as shown in Table 1 below, creating a need for more facilities such as lecture rooms, staff and student accommodation, furniture, equipment, tools and reading materials.
